Masta Jumba Chagala

Masta is a legend in Kenya’s percussion industry. He may be the last true traditional drum player and teacher of his age. Most of today’s famous percussionists, whether they live here or have moved abroad, originally studied under his tutelage.

He started playing drums while still in primary school, taught by his elder brother. Over the years, he also met and was taught by various international drummers including Adama from Guinea and Koko Malali from the Congo. He was a founding member of the famous Jabali Afrika band; patron, teacher and band member of Abaki Simba, and has been involved with several other groups including Talking Drums of Africa and Kenya Dance Traditional Group.

Masta exclusively plays the Kenyan traditional drums (as opposed to the famous West African djembe), as he feels it’s important to be in touch with your own culture and so others can feel the rhythm of the land. He also plays grooves rather than solo as he feels this is the right way to drum, as a collective. His own unique drum, called Bambi, is made from two Kamba drums, the Kilume and the Mbalia, and is his own design.

His students describe him as “the most patient teacher ever,” “a fountain of giving,” and “a true teacher.” He has taught students at social halls across Eastlands, Starehe and Madaraka constituencies.
